PORTMEIRION
July 12th – 16th 2020

The four-night stay in Portmeirion, the magical Italianate village nestling on the edge of the Dwyryd estuary and used as the setting for the sixties TV series The Prisoner, has been organised after the great success of the stopover during the recent Dragon Trail through Wales.

The eccentric vision of the architect Clough Williams-Ellis has been a favoured haunt of many famous people who have stayed over the years, including George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Noel Coward, George Bernard Shaw, Ingrid Bergman – the list goes on!

Noel Coward reputedly wrote Blithe Spirit while a guest here.

Each day we take advantage of great driving roads, including Bwlch-y-Groes and Llanberis passes, stunning scenery ranging from seascapes to mountains, and leisurely daily mileages. This is an event not to miss!

Routes take in interesting attractions, just one of which is a train journey to the summit of Snowdon, and the usual Country Lane Tours detailed road book ensures stress-free navigation.

The event is restricted to just twenty-five rooms, some being in the quaint village houses, but all main meals are in the hotel.

The itinerary is as follows:

Sunday, July 12th. Arrival at Portmeirion during the day. Cars have exclusive reserved parking in the village. There will be a champagne reception on the terrace before dinner at 7.30pm.

Monday, July 13th. The day starts with a scenic run via the Aberglaslyn, Nant Gwynant, and Llanberis Passes to the Snowdon Mountain Railway for a trip to the top of the highest peak in Wales. Its rugged features were used as training by Sir Edmund Hilary for the expedition to Everest in 1953, and the views from the 3,560 feet summit are amazing.

After descending back down lunch will be at the Victoria Hotel before we drive a short distance to the fascinating Llanberis Slate Museum where you can get an insight into how the industry flourished in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The original quarry went bust in 1969 and the Receiver took one look, realised it was a hundred years behind the times, and had the foresight to recognise the equipment needed to be saved as it was. It reopened as a museum in 1972.

The vast collection includes the largest working waterwheel on the UK mainland.

The scenic route back to Portmeirion runs through picturesque Beddgelert where you have the opportunity to stop and wander along the river bank, or maybe browse some of the craft shops.

Dinner is 7.30pm.

Tuesday, July 14th. We start the day with visit to the ancestral home of Hedd Wyn, the celebrated Welsh shepherd poet who was killed at Paschendale in 1917 and posthumously awarded the black bardic chair at the  National Eisteddfod later that year. I think you’ll find the history fascinating!

Next we ascend the notorious Bwlch-y-Groes Pass, also known as Hellfire Pass (next page), and famous in the early days of motoring as a testing ground for cars’ hill climbing abilities.

Lunch is at Palé Hall, a magnificent Victorian house and now a hotel on the outskirts of Bala. The  afternoon  route  skirts  Llyn  Celyn reservoir, where in 1965 the   valley and a village (see below) were  flooded to  provide water for Liverpool, and detours via the slate town of Blaenau Ffestiniog before returning to Portmeirion. Dinner 7.30pm.

Wednesday, July 15th. Today’s itinerary includes Caernarfon Castle, Dinas Dinlle aircraft museum, lunch at Nant Gwrtheyrn (below), a quarry village once only reached by foot or sea and now restored as a Welsh Language Centre, and the David Lloyd George Museum. Of course our wander along the Lleyn Peninsula could lead to sensory overload as you’re treated to more of the picturesque scenery North Wales has to offer. Dinner 7.30pm

Thursday July 16th. Departure for home.

The leisurely daily schedule is designed to allow you to enjoy the sights and attractions, as well as leaving plenty of time to explore the extensive grounds of Portmeirion, the eccentricities of the buildings, or to simply chill out on the terrace with a glass of wine.

What’s included in the price?

  • Champagne reception on the terrace on Sunday evening

Chateaux, Champagne & Circuits. September 18th - October 2nd.https://www.countrylanetours.co.uk/1608/chateaus-champagne-circuits/ Thu, 14 Nov 2019 05:59:56 +0000 http://www.countrylanetours.co.uk/?p=1608 ‘It is not the cheaper things that we want to possess, but expensive things that cost a lot less’ – John Ruskin.

The tour takes in assorted luxury chateaux hotels, along with various racing circuits, some forgotten that can be driven, and various other attractions. With great driving roads and terrific scenery this is a tour not to miss and will not run again!

Listed below is the itinerary for the event, which is designed to be a relaxing holiday with your car, not just an old car rally. There is no night driving, and  absolutely no competition, other than getting to the bar first!

May 9th, Saturday. Arrivals at Hotel La Chartreuse du Val Saint Esprit, which is just 52 miles from Calais and  an  easy  run  down  the motorway. Country Lane Tours has used the venue several times previously and it never fails to impress. Food is excellent, with vegetables mainly sourced on site in the extensive garden. Overnight – Gosnay.

May 10th, Sunday. A leisurely day with the option of just chilling out at hotel or taking a scenic run through the lanes to Vimy Ridge and the newly refurbished museum. A walk around some of the restored trenches gives an idea of how horrific conditions were in WW1 and the graves an insight into the terrible loss of life. Overnight – Gosnay.  MILEAGE FOR DAY – 0 / 56

May 11th, Monday. We set off south today, via the old Reims racing circuit at Gueux and a tour by train of the champagne caves of Mercier at Epernay to the 5 star Royal Champagne at Champillon. The historic buildings on the pit straight are being lovingly restored to their original splendour and as you drive along it you can imagine what it was like in its heyday. I’m negotiating for us to have a buffet lunch in the restored buildings right.

The afternoon sees us travelling to Epernay and a tour and champagne tasting before arriving at the hotel which has an incredible view across the valley. The restaurant has a Michelin star! Overnight – Champillon.   MILEAGE   FOR DAY – 156

May 13th, Tuesday. A run through the French lanes to the incredible Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte. The chateau predates Versailles. The gardens are truly epic.

After lunch at Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte we travel on to the famous banked circuit at Montlhery where I’m hoping we can take the cars onto the track – currently negotiating! Overnight – Montlhery, but possibly Provins. MILEAGE FOR DAY – 115

May 13th, Wednesday. A slightly higher mileage day so we’re taking the motorway for most of the way to Dijon-Prenois circuit and   then   through   the   lanes   to Chateau Gilly, our stay for the next two nights.  Overnight  – Gilly-les- Citeaux.  MILEAGE FOR DAY – 196

May  14th,  Thursday.  Another chance to chill out or perhaps take a sort run via the village of Nuits- St-Georges, famous for its wine, Chateau  Savigny-les-Beaune  with its amazing collection of motorbikes,  Abarth  cars, and aeroplanes, before lunch in the historic town of Beaune.
Overnight – Gilly-les-Citeaux. MILEAGE FOR DAY – 0 / 38

May 15th, Friday.   Once more some scenic good driving roads via Magny Cours racing circuit to Vichy where our hotel is in the centre but close to the river with views over the park.  Overnight  – Vichy. MILEAGE FOR DAY – 176

May 16th, Saturday. Vichy – Clermont-Ferrand circuit – Limoges. More great driving roads and spectacular scenery, climbing initially through hills covered with vines to the Clermont- Ferrand circuit.
Unfortunately Limoges, whilst famous for its exquisite porcelain, doesn’t have a hotel in the centre that is upmarket and has a car park, which means using a Novotel about ten minutes out. It’s OK (typical Novotel!) so I’ve not organised dinner as people may wish to go into town. I’m in the process of sorting a visit and tour of a porcelain factory. Overnight – Limoges. MILEAGE FOR DAY – 141

May 17th, Sunday. Limoges – Montabazon. A leisurely wander through rural countryside again to our next location, the spectacular Chateau D’Artigny  in  Montabazon,  on  the outskirts of Tours in the Loire Valley. Overnight – Montbazon. MILEAGE FOR DAY – 129

May  18th,  Monday.  There  will be a scenic route in the Loire Valley and possibly a boat trip. Overnight – Montbazon. MILEAGE FOR DAY –  TBA

May 19th, Tuesday. Montbazon – Le Mans – Bayeux. Once more heading north we stop at Le Mans where you can drive a large section of the historic circuit, including the famous Mulsanne Straight, and visit the museum. Overnight – Bayeux. MILEAGE FOR DAY – 169

May 20th, Wednesday. Bayeux tapestry – Omaha Beach – Overlord Museum. A relaxed day again, taking in local attractions Overnight – Bayeux. MILEAGE FOR DAY – 164

May 21st, Thursday. Bayeux – Honfleur – Rouen Essarts old circuit – V1 Rocket site. A pleasant run initially along the coast via pretty Honfleur, the old Rouen Essarts track and the amazing ruins of the Vi rocket site at Ardouval before arriving  at  our  hotel  right  in  the historic centre of Rouen.  Overnight – Rouen. MILEAGE FOR DAY – 162

May 22nd, Friday. Rouen. A relaxing final day to just chill and take in the sights of Rouen. Overnight – Rouen. MILEAGE FOR DAY – 0

May 23rd, Departure for home.

Please note! There may be slight variations to the schedule if circumstances dictate, but regular updates will be issued to registered participants.

12th Credit Crunch September 12th - 15th(16th)https://www.countrylanetours.co.uk/1589/12th-credit-crunch-special/ Tue, 05 Nov 2019 13:10:33 +0000 http://www.countrylanetours.co.uk/?p=1589 SUNDAY / MONDAY / TUESDAY / (WEDNESDAY)

Lake Vyrnwy
The 12th Credit Crunch offers the usual superb scenic views and a variety of great driving roads, this time in the Welsh Borders and Berwyn mountains. The unique and unusual attractions will intrigue!

With the wedding business nowadays dominating the income stream for most hotels it’s now virtually impossible to get a decent weekend rate so once again the event starts on a Sunday, although I’m afraid there is a slight increase over the rate held for the last few years. This time we are staying at the 4-star Lion Quays hotel on the edge of the Shropshire Union Canal at Weston Rhyn. The package costs £375 per person (based on two people sharing a room) for three nights’ dinner, bed and breakfast and entry to all attractions, I’m sure you’ll agree it’s still a bargain, and, if inflation is allowed for, the first Credit Crunch would cost £404 today!

There are 55 rooms available at Lion Quays and when they’re gone that’s it as there are no other hotels near by. Enquiries exceeded capacity at the Grange in 2019 and some people were disappointed so to be certain of a place  book early!
Lion Quays Hotel & Spa

The itinerary is as follows:

Sunday, April 26th. Arrivals at the 4-star Lion Quays Hotel & Spa during the day followed by dinner at 7.30pm.

Monday, April 27th. Leaving the hotel we drive to the British Ironwork Centre and Shropshire Sculpture Park. Here you can marvel at the incredible animals made from iron and steel that dot the park as well as meander around their showroom. The huge gorilla, made from spoons in conjunction with Uri Geller, is simply stunning!

Leaving the centre our route takes us through back roads and stunning scenery via one of the Seven Wonders of Wales, the Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall which drops 240 feet down a sheer cliff, Lake Vyrnwy and the Berwyn mountains to Powys Castle and gardens for lunch.

After lunch we visit another sculpture venue, but this is totally different to the morning one!  The Andrew Logan Museum of Sculpture in Berriew is the only museum in Europe dedicated to a living artist and the contents are even more eccentric than the British Ironwork Centre! Who says the Credit Crunch isn’t educational?

The run back to Lion Quays includes the option for retail therapy in Welshpool.

Dinner in the evening 7.30pm.

Tuesday, April 28th. Once more great driving roads and picturesque villages before we arrive in Montgomery, a small quaint town that time passed by. We’ll visit Cloverlands Model Car Museum, but a must is to call in at Bunners, a Tardis-like store which seems to sell everything!

Leaving Montgomery we head for a wine tasting at Kerry Vale Vineyard and lunch.

Our route back is once again via country lanes and small Shropshire villages.

Dinner 7.30pm.

Wednesday, April 10th. Departure for home unless you’re staying the extra night. If you do decide to stay a special rate of £79 per person D,B&B applies.

There’s still plenty more to see in the area, but you could, of course, just chill out and take advantage of the swimming pool and spa facilities.

CREDIT CRUNCH SPECIAL. The cost for the event, after serious bartering, is just £375 per person, based on two people sharing. Single supplement £35 per night.

Included in the price are the following:

Three nights’ accommodation on a dinner, bed & breakfast basis at the 4-star Lion

  • Quays & Spa, Weston Rhyn
  • Entry to British Ironwork Centre
  • Parking at Rhaeadr Waterfall
  • Entry to Powys Castle
  • Entry to Andrew Logan Museum
  • Entry to Cloverdale Toy Car Museum
  • Wine tasting at Kerry Vale vineyard
  • Buffet lunch Monday
  • Buffet lunch Tuesday
  • Detailed route instructions

10th Credit Crunch Special! 2018https://www.countrylanetours.co.uk/1381/10th-credit-crunch-special-2018/ Tue, 18 Apr 2017 19:32:13 +0000 http://www.countrylanetours.co.uk/?p=1381 Country Lane Tours
10th CREDIT CRUNCH SPECIAL!
April 13th – 15th (16th) 2018
FRIDAY / SATURDAY / SUNDAY / (MONDAY)

The 10th Credit Crunch Special is based at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel & Spa, Sheffield Park, on the edge of the Peak District National Park.

Sadly I have failed, despite liberal use of thumb-screws and other assorted torture techniques, to keep the price down to the usual £299, so I’m afraid there is an increase to £345 per person for three nights’ dinner, bed and breakfast, two buffet lunches, entry to all attractions, rally plates, etc. This, as usual, is based on two people sharing a room.

Chatsworth House

The event this time features a visit to Chatsworth House and The National Tramway Museum at Crich.

The route each day will take in picturesque scenery and as far as possible quiet lanes, ideal for our type of car.

The itinerary is as follows:

Friday, April 13th. Arrivals at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel during the day followed by dinner at 7.30pm.

Saturday, April 14th. It’s only twelve miles to Chatsworth House but we’ll be taking a scenic route to arrive around 11am.

I’ve arranged for a reserved parking area and you are free to enjoy the spectacular house and gardens for as long as you wish.

A buffet lunch will be served at 1pm, after which you can continue to explore the magnificent venue before taking a further scenic route back to the hotel.

The Red Lion Pub

Dinner at 7.30pm.

Sunday, April 15th. Another scenic run, this time to the National Tram Museum at Crich.

Arrangements have been made for our cars to be parked up in the Tramway village, and for a second year a pub has been closed as the Red Lion will be for our exclusive use for lunch!

You can take as many tram rides as you like as well as soaking up the atmosphere of bygone days. Once again there will be a scenic run back to the hotel.

Dinner once more 7.30pm.

Monday, April 16th. Departure for home unless you’re staying the extra night. If you do decide to stay a special reduced rate of £70 per person D,B&B applies.

CREDIT CRUNCH SPECIAL. The cost is just £345 per person, based on two people sharing. Single supplement £35 per night.

Included in the price are the following:

  • Three nights’ accommodation on a dinner, bed & breakfast basis at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel & Spa, Sheffield
  • Entry to Chatsworth House & Gardens
  • Reserved parking at Chatsworth House
  • Buffet lunch at Chatsworth House
  • Entry to Crich Tramway Village
  • Parking in Crich Tramway Village itself
  • Buffet lunch in the Red Lion pub in Crich Tramway Village
  • Detailed route instructions
  • Information pack on arrival with leaflets on local attractions
  • Rally plates
  • Pendant navigator’s pen
  • Plus more!

Haggis Trail September 9th – 22nd 2017https://www.countrylanetours.co.uk/1322/haggis-trail-september-9th-22nd-2017/ Mon, 19 Dec 2016 09:17:33 +0000 http://www.countrylanetours.co.uk/?p=1322 This tour has been eagerly awaited by regulars on Country Lane Tours events and from advanced interest and the fact entry is limited to just thirty-four cars in total, it looks as though it may be oversubscribed almost immediately. Certainly at the moment there’s no intention to send this schedule out to anyone other than people who have expressed an interest and priority will, as usual, be given on the basis of receipt of entry forms. Once the thirty-four places are taken then a reserve list will be opened, but deposit cheques will not be cashed for those on that reserve list.

We will all gather for the first night’s dinner in Penrith on Saturday, September 9th before heading off west the next morning to Ardrossan and the ferry to Arran where we spend two nights, circumnavigating the island on the second day. From Arran we island hop up the west coast of Scotland, taking in Mull, Skye, Harris and Lewis before taking the last of our seven ferries from Stornaway to Ullapool on the mainland.

We stay in Ullapool for two nights and then join the famous North 500 up to Durness and across the top of Scotland via Thurso to the amazing Ackergill Tower, with its incredible views out across the North Sea.

akergill tower

We spend two nights at Ackergill Tower, taking a short tour on our second day to John O’Groats and the Castle of Mey, the former holiday home of the late Queen Mother.

Leaving Ackergill we hug the east coast south, still on the North 500, via Inverness and Aviemore to picturesque Pitlochry, our final destination of the tour.

For most of the event we’re using quiet rural roads where the major hazard is likely to be deer. It’s designed for you to soak up the scenery and step back in time on the islands. Some of the short ferries cannot take all the cars at one go so if you arrive and boat is full you’ll be forced to simply wait for a while, grab a coffee, and just chill!

Country Lane Tours does not usually run a support vehicle on UK events but, in view of the remoteness of some of the areas and roads there will be one this time. Of course, I will also be on hand throughout.

Finally – midges! You’ve all heard about how the Scottish midges are fearsome, and this is true. However, by September we should hopefully be safe as they are at their worst June/ July / August and tend to congregate near peatlands and bracken.

The itinerary is as follows:

Saturday, September 9th 2017. The group collects for a first night dinner and overnight halt near Penrith. The hotel is close to the M6 motorway and it gives people travelling from the south an easy run up, assuming the car park at Birmingham is avoided by taking the toll route. £5.50, but worth it! Overnight Penrith.

Sunday, September 10th 2017. Penrith – Brodick (Arran). A leisurely run though the lowlands takes us to the port of Adrossan and the ferry across to Arran, our first island on the tour.

Along the way we pass by the famous blacksmith’s forge in Gretna, stop off at the Devil’s Porridge Museum, and the Robert Burns monument in Kilmarnock.

The crossing from Adrossan to Brodick takes approximately an hour and our hotel for the next two nights is just a short distance from the port. Overnight Brodick, mileage for day – 129.

Monday, September 11th 2017. Brodick. Today you can take a scenic tour around the south of the island, simply chill out at the hotel and take advantage of the facilities, or take a walk into town. You might even decide to do all three! Overnight Brodick, mileage for day – 34 (0).

Tuesday, September 12th 2017. Brodick – Craignure (Mull). Leaving Brodick we travel the short distance to Lochranza, catch the short ferry to Cloanaig on the Kintyre Penninsula and then meander north to the bustling little port of Oban and board another ferry to Craignure on Mull. Overnight Craignure, mileage for day – 75.

Wednesday, September 13th 2017. Craignure – Mallaig. The proverb ‘the early bird catches the worm’ definitely applies today, although it doesn’t really matter, at least initially!

We follow the road from Craignure to Tobermory and catch the ferry to the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, but……….the ferry can only take eighteen cars if you’re not in the first group you’ll have to chill out in one of the numerous cafés in this pretty little town, and perhaps visit the museum or the aquarium while you wait for the next boat.

Once across the water you really are in wild country, but it’s a question of driving slowly on the single track road and admiring the scenery until arriving in Mallaig and catching the ferry across the Sound of Sleat to Skye. Overnight Duisdalemore, Skye, mileage for day – 85.

Thursday, September 14th 2017. Skye. A leisurely day, with a short circular tour of the lower part of the island and a visit to the famous Talisker distillery. Overnight Duisdalemore, Skye, mileage for day – 45.

Friday, September 15th 2017. Skye – Harris – Lewis (Stornoway). Higher mileage today and a longer ferry as we cross from Uig to Tairbeart on the Isle of Harris.

We start with fifty miles of spectacular scenery as we travel to the north of Skye and the tiny port of Uig.
The ferry docks in Tairbeart on Harris, where Compton McKenzie wrote Whiskey Galore, based on the true story of the SS Politician which sank off Eriskay in 1941.

From Tairbert we wind our way north and onto Lewis and our final island destination of Stornaway. Overnight Stornoway, mileage for day – 90.

Saturday, September 16th 2017. Stornoway – Ullapool. Catching the mid-morning ferry puts us into Ullapool at lunchtime and leaves the afternoon free to wander around this pretty little port. Overnight Ullapool, mileage for day – 6.

ullapool

Sunday, September 17th 2017. Ullapool. Today a chance to just chill, read the Sunday papers, take a walk along the waterfront, or, if the weather is good, maybe a cruise along Loch Broom. Overnight Ullapool, mileage for the day – 0.

Monday, September 18th 2017. Ullapool – Ackergill (via Durness). You’ll be pleased you had a day off to recharge your batteries, as today’s run is not only fairly long but also takes in some of the most remote and scenic roads in Scotland as we join part of the famous North 500 that crosses the very top of Scotland. You’ll need to keep on the lookout for deer!

Our hotel for the next two nights is the 5 star Ackergill Tower, just north of Wick, which has a history going back to the 1400s.

The first night dinner will be traditional Scottish, including piping in of the haggis and entertainment. Overnight Ackergill, mileage for day – 161.

Tuesday, September 19th. Ackergill – John O’Groats. A short loop today to take in John O’Groats (you have to visit once in your life!) and the Castle of Mey.

In the afternoon another chance to relax and take in the surroundings. Overnight Ackergill, mileage for day – 46.

Wednesday, September 20th. Ackergill – Pitlochry. Leaving Ackergill our route hugs the east coast south on excellent roads all the way to Pitlochry. Along the way we cross the Black Isle, traverse the bridge over the Moray Firth at Inverness, and pass by Aviemore and the Cairgorms.

atholl palace
Our hotel for the final two nights of the tour is the Atholl Palace, with its fairytale appearance and spectacular views down the Tummel Valley. Overnight Pitlochry, mileage for day – 188.

Thursday, September 21st. Pitlochry. A leisurely loop again today, taking in Edradour distillery (the smallest in Scotland), Blair Castle, and a working watermill before a run over the tops to Tummel Bridge and then back along Loch Tummel to the hotel and our final night’s dinner together. Overnight Pitlochry, mileage for the day – 40.

Friday, September 22nd. Departure for home. Finishing on the Friday enables people from the very south to plan a leisurely run home if they wish, as Pitlochry is on the A9 that runs into the M90, M80, M74 and then M6.

Included in the price are the following:

  • Thirteen nights hotel accommodation on a B&B basis,
  • Ten dinners, including traditional Scottish at Ackergill Tower with piping of the haggis and entertainment.
  • Seven ferries
  • Entry to various attractions
  • Back up support vehicle with experienced mechanic
  • Organiser present throughout to deal with any queries
  • Detailed road book
  • Rally plates
  • Sundry extras including some meals

Space precludes a detailed description of everything you will see, so the details here are necessarily a synopsis. However, the daily mileage allows plenty of time to relax and enjoy the scenery and quiet roads as well as hotel facilities. The TOTAL mileage from Penrith to Pitlochry is approximately 975.

VERY IMPORTANT, PLEASE NOTE!!!!!!!! We are travelling to remote areas of Scotland where large hotels are not commonplace so in some locations (in particular Stornoway) the group may be split, depending on numbers joining the tour.

The usual system is to give priority for both location and room allocation in order of entry form receipt. This will apply on the Haggis Trail.

There are thirty-four rooms at Ackergill Tower, so if they are filled there will be the option to stay in Wick and be transported to the dinners on both nights.

If you have any queries please don’t hesitate to call me on 01824 790280, or via our contact form

Monte Carlo Meander May 15th – 28th 2017https://www.countrylanetours.co.uk/1311/monte-carlo-meander/ Thu, 15 Dec 2016 09:48:18 +0000 http://www.countrylanetours.co.uk/?p=1311 The tour starts with a gala dinner at a luxury chateau near Bethune, in northern France, before meandering along rural roads and Alpine passes to Monte Carlo for a three night stay at the five-star Fairmont Hotel, on the Grand Prix circuit between Casino Square and the tunnel.

You will be able to explore and soak up the atmosphere of this amazing jewel of the Cote D’Azur, and, of course, drive the Grand Prix circuit, before the tour heads north via Arles, Lyon, Bourges and Le Mans to a final two night halt and last night dinner in beautiful Honfleur.

Established Country Lane Tours clients need no introduction to the meticulous planning that precedes each event, with every inch of the route reconnoitred and each hotel carefully vetted and personally checked.

A detailed, easy-to-read, road book gives precise instructions, complete with information on attractions, and allows you to travel at your own pace. Furthermore, a support vehicle with an experienced mechanic accompanies every Continental event. The tour arranger is also present throughout to deal with any problems that might occur.

Cars of all types and vintages are welcome and Country Lane Tours events always have a varied selection of marques and ages participating.

The itinerary is as follows:

Monday, May 15th. The group collects for a first night dinner and overnight halt approximately an hour’s drive from Calais at Gosnay. The charm and old world luxury of Hotel La Chartreuse du Val Saint Esprit (see right) will be familiar to many Country Lane Tours regulars, but suffice to say the surroundings are truly stunning. Dinner will be 8pm which will enable people to arrive from the various channel ports without stress. Overnight Gosnay, mileage from Calais, 52.

Tuesday, May 16th. Gosnay – Les Monthairons. The run today takes us through mostly rural roads and rolling countryside to Les Monthairons, on the River Meuse. Here our overnight halt is Hostellerie du Chateau des Monthairons (see left), another elegant chateau set amidst manicured parkland. Perhaps the tour should be called ‘Chateaux & Circuits’ ! Overnight Les Monthairons, mileage for day – 202.

Wednesday, May 17th. Les Monthairons – Bourg en Bresse. Once more rural roads and peaceful villages, although a slightly longer day. However, unlike the UK, it’s easy to cruise at a reasonable speed without the hazards of a million cones and speed cameras! Overnight Bourg en Bresse, mileage for day – 232.

Thursday, May 18th. Bourg en Bresse – Embrun. We now start to get into the hills and there are some great driving roads as well as stunning views. We’re also at one point following the famous Route Napoleon.
We’re now into the Alps and our hotel in Embrun is Chateau La Robeyere, situated on the outskirts of the small town with open aspect across the valley. Overnight Embrun, mileage for day – 165.

Friday, May 19th. Embrun – Monte Carlo. An easy run today through scenic countryside as we drop down to the coast and take the short motorway section between Nice and Monte Carlo.
The Fairmont, our base for the next three nights, is situated on the hairpin bend between Casino Square and the Tunnel. All rooms have a sea view, so you can look out over the Mediterranean and survey the yachts anchored in the bay. Overnight Monte Carlo, mileage for day – 136.

Saturday, May 20th. Monte Carlo. With vehicles tucked up in the hotel car park it’s an opportunity to relax and explore the principality.

The Hop On – Hop Off bus tour enables you to visit all the places of interest, including the old town with its narrow streets, the Pink Palace, Prince Albert’s residence, Prince Rainier’s car museum, and much more.
The evening is free for you to dine wherever you wish, and perhaps visit the casino. Overnight Monte Carlo, mileage for day – 0.

Sunday, May 21st. Monte Carlo. Another day to just chill out, with lunch perhaps on the 7th floor of the Fairmont, overlooking the expensive yachts in the port? Overnight Monte Carlo, mileage for day – 0.

Monday, May 22nd. Mont Carlo – Arles. Saying our farewell to Mont Carlo we take a short detour into Italy!
To savour a little more of the cote D’Azur we travel along the coast through Menton before crossing the border into Italy at Ventimiglia and joining the motorway west, high up and travel along the Moyen Corniche.
There are great views out to sea and we stay on the motorway all the way to the ancient city of Arles, in the Camargue.
Arles has historic Roman remains, and, of course, is linked with Vincent Van Gogh who rented rooms in the city in 1888. Overnight Arles, mileage for day – 198.

Tuesday, May 23rd. Arles – Lyon. Lyon, founded by the Romans in the first century B.C., was given World Heritage status by UNESCO in 1998.
In order to arrive in plenty of time to see the sights we’re using the motorway once more, but it does pass through very pleasant scenery. Overnight Lyon, mileage for the day – 174.

Wednesday, May 24th. Lyon – Bourges. Off into the countryside again and quiet back roads as we head towards Le Mans, stopping overnight in the medieval city of Bourges. The most amazing thing about Bourges is the marsh area, at the foot of the old town, split into numerous allotments and walkways. Overnight Bourges, mileage for day – 169.

Thursday, May 25th. Bourges – Le Mans. Again we travel along rural roads, but less miles today allow an opportunity to visit the Le Mans museum before adjourning to our hotel. Overnight Le Mans, mileage for day – 135.

Friday, May 26th. Le Mans – Honfleur. An opportunity to drive the open sections of the circuit before heading off to the final destination of the tour in Honfleur.
Honfleur (see left), situated on the Seine estuary, is renowned for its picturesque ancient port and links with famous artists, including Claude Monet. Overnight Honfleur, mileage for day – 115.

Saturday, May 27th. Honfleur. A day to chill out in the town, explore the port area and its myriad restaurants and shops selling calvados, before the final dinner of the tour in the evening. Overnight Honfleur, mileage for the day – 0.

Sunday, May 28th. Departure for home. Ferry ports are easily accessible, with Le Havre just 16 miles away. Caen is 40, Cherbourg 115 and Calais 171 by good motorway.

Included in the price are the following:

  • Thirteen nights hotel accommodation on a B&B basis, including three nights in the 5 star Fairmont, Monte Carlo
  • First night’s gourmet dinner with wine in Chateau du Val Saint Esprit
  • Dinner at Hostellerie du Chateau Le Monthairons
  • Dinner at Chateau La Robeyere
  • First night’s dinner at Fairmont Hotel, Monte Carlo
  • Guided tour of Monte Carlo
  • Guided tour of Lyon
  • Entry to Le Mans museum
  • Service vehicle and mechanic
  • Experienced tour director
  • Detailed road book and map
  • Rally plates
  • Windscreen sticker
  • Farewell dinner in Honfleur
  • Sundry extras including some meals

Space precludes a detailed description of everything you will see, so the details here are necessarily a synopsis. However, the daily mileage allows plenty of time to relax and enjoy the scenery and quiet roads as well as hotel facilities. The TOTAL mileage from Gosnay to Honfleur is approximately 1570.

If you have any queries please don’t hesitate to call me on 01824 790280, or via our contact page

The entry is restricted to just twenty-five cars so early booking is advisable to avoid disappointment.

The 5th Dragon Trail, September 4th – 10th will be based at Chateau Rhianfa.

The 5th Dragon Trail deviates from the pattern of previous ones by staying for the entire period in the same hotel and traveling out each day on a different route. This does not, however, mean missing out on attractions, which include a trip to the the top of Snowdon and a morning at an indoor go-kart track competing for the Dragon trophy!

wales

Routes each day will vary dramatically and, as usual, take in spectacular scenery, including the road above, not previously covered on a Dragon Trail.

Our hotel for the six days is Chateau Rhianfa (www.chateaurhianfa.com), a fairytale castle on the edge of the Menai Straits on the beautiful Isle of Anglesey, with stunning views across to the mountains.

Once more entries are restricted to just twenty cars, with early reservations having water view rooms, so to avoid disappointment it’s advisable to book quickly!

The itinerary is as follows:

Sunday, September 4th 2016. Arrivals at the luxury Chateau Rhianfa during the day and a chance to chill out on the terrace before dinner. The hotel, originally a private house and completed in 1851, has been granted 5 – star guest accommodation status by Visit Wales.

Monday, September 5th 2016. Anglesey East. We start the day by traveling the short distance to the picturesque town of Beaumaris, visiting the Old Gaol and Courthouse.

Leaving the town we hug the west coast and visit Red Wharf Bay (the prototype Land Rover was developed here) and Moelfre Life Boat Museum before stopping at Bull Bay Golf Club for lunch.  Following lunch halts are Wylfa nuclear power station visitor centre, Cemaes Bay, Llynnon working windmill, and finally the Tunicliffe art gallery in Llangefni.  Mileage for day – 60

Tuesday, September 6th 2016. Snowdon Summit Little driving today as we cross the Menai Straits and into the mountains to Llanberis where we board the famous rack railway to the top of Snowdon. On our return to the base station it’s a short distance to the amazing slate museum which contains the biggest water wheel on the UK mainland, second only to the Laxey Wheel in the Isle of Man. You now have plenty of time to explore locally, maybe take a drive to the top of the Llanberis Pass, or return to the hotel.  Mileage for day – 30

Wednesday, September 7th 2016. Anglesey West.  Leaving the hotel our route takes us via Anglesey Sea Zoo, a bespoke chocolate maker, the famous sea salt producer Halen Mon, and Tacla Taid Transport Museum to lunch at the White Eagle in Rhoscolyn, William & Kate’s local when they lived on Anglesey.

After lunch it’s yet more scenic lanes to South Stack lighthouse and then via Llanfair pwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobllllantysiliogogogoch to Plas Newydd, the home of the Marquis of Anglesey and location of the incredible Whistler mural. Mileage for day – 75

Thursday, September 8th 2016. Go-kart Trophy.   Once more crossing to the mainland we meander through the lanes to Redline Karting. This will be a great fun and even if you’ve never driven a kart before you’ll soon get the hang of it. If you decide not to take part then seated in the viewing room armed with a coffee you can cheer on the racers. Lunch is in Snowdonia Pub and Micro Brewery, Waunfawr.

After lunch we meander through the lanes (see heading photo again) to the Real Car Company in Bethesda who have kindly allowed us to wander around their showroom of assorted Bentleys and Rolls Royces from the twenties onwards. You will probably have seen their adverts in assorted magazines over the years. Mileage for day – 51

Friday, September 9th 2016. Lleyn Penninsula.  Once more scenery sensory overload as we follow the outline of the Lleyn Penninsula.

First stop is Caernarfon where you have a chance to explore the historic town and maybe visit the castle before traversing the coast via Caernarfon Airworld Museum, Nant Gwrtheyrn (a tiny village once only accessible by sea) to our lunch halt in the small seaside village of Aberdaron.

After lunch our route takes in the south side of the peninsula, passing through Abersoch, Pwllheli and Criccieth (stopping at the Lloyd George museum at Llanystumdwy) before heading back to Chateau Rhianfa. Mileage for day – 103

Saturday, September 10th 2016.  Departure for home.

Country Lane Tours Welsh Weekend June 2016https://www.countrylanetours.co.uk/1205/welsh-weekend-june-2016/ Tue, 05 Jan 2016 09:06:52 +0000 http://www.countrylanetours.co.uk/?p=1205 The 2016 Country Lane Tours Welsh Weekend is based at the four-star Metropole Hotel in the Victorian spa town of Llandrindod Wells. It takes place on June 17th – 19th (20th) Friday / Saturday / Sunday / (Monday)

metropole

The quest to keep the three days at just £345 per person is becoming much more difficult as years progress but, after some serious negotiation, I’ve managed to get a deal with the hotel as luckily the current owner, the fifth generation of the family to run the business, is a car enthusiast. So, for the 5th time it’s still £345 per person, based on two people sharing!

The Metropole has recently been refurbished and upgraded and use of the swimming pool and spa is included in the package.

Llandrindod Wells itself is an interesting little town and its slightly faded Victorian grandeur has luckily not been blighted by modern development.

The itinerary is as follows:

Friday, June 17th. Arrivals at the 4-star Metropole Hotel & Spa during the day followed by dinner at 7.30pm.

Saturday, June 18th. After a leisurely breakfast we depart for a run through the lanes to Abbey Cwm Hir Hall.

Nestling in a picturesque valley this amazing building, built in 1834, was purchased in 1997 in a semi-derelict state by Paul & Victoria Humpherston and restored over a nine year period. Virtually every room has a different theme and you will emerge from the guided tour shaking your head at the sheer eccentricity – you definitely will not have seen anything like it before!

The twelve acre garden is now returned to pristine condition and a buffet lunch will be served in a marquee in the grounds.

A short walk away is the tiny hamlet of Abbey Cwm Hir, along with the ruins of the 12th century abbey.

abbey

After lunch we take to the lanes again and make our way via Welsh Royal Crystal in Rhayader to a loop around the lakes that contribute to the stunning beauty of the Elan Valley (below).

The display at the Elan Valley Visitor Centre gives an insight into the construction of the series of dams that were built to supply water to Birmingham.

Once back in Llandrindod Wells you’ll have time to relax, visit the National Cycle Museum a short distance from the hotel, and perhaps explore the town a little before dinner.

Dinner will be at 7.30pm.

Sunday, June 19th. After breakfast we depart via yet another scenic route to Hay-on-Wye, world famous for its myriad of second-hand bookshops and, of course, it’s the location for the annual literary festival.

The buffet lunch is at the award-winning Swan Inn.

The return route to the Metropole takes in more scenic roads.

Lake with Llandrindod in the background

Dinner will be again at 7.30pm.

Monday, June 20th. Departure for home, but if you wish to stay an extra night a special rate of just £65 per person, dinner, bed, and breakfast applies.

You might like to visit the Red Kite Feeding Centre at Rhayader, or just chill out in the hotel pool.

The cost for the event, after serious bartering, is once again just £345 per person, based on two people sharing. Single supplement £21 per night.

Included in the price are the following:

  • Three nights’ accommodation on a dinner, bed & breakfast basis at the 4-star Metropole Hotel, Llandrindod Wells
  • Use of hotel swimming pool & spa facilitiesEntrance and guided tour of Abbey Cwm Hir Hall
  • Buffet lunch at Abbey Cwm Hir Hall
  • Glass engraving demonstration at Welsh Royal Crystal
  • Entry to National Cycle Museum
  • Buffet lunch at Hay on Wye
  • Detailed route instructions
  • Information pack on arrival with leaflets on local attractions
  • Rally plates and windscreen stickers
  • Tour organiser with the group throughout to deal with any queries
  • Plus more!

The surrounding countryside features stunning driving roads, and during the weekend we take in the amazing Elan Valley and its spectacular dams, Abbey Cwm Hir with its vast displays of Minton, Wedgewood and Royal Doulton ceramics, Welsh Royal Crystal, Hay-on-Wye, the second-hand book mecca, the National Cycle Museum, and much more!

The leisurely three day event (with an optional fourth night at a discounted rate) costs just £345 per person based on two people sharing.

This includes three nights’ dinner, bed and breakfast at the historic Metropole Hotel, family owned since 1897, use of the heated indoor swimming pool and spa facilities, buffet lunches Saturday & Sunday, detailed road book, rally plates, entry to all attractions, and the presence of the event organiser throughout to deal with any queries.

As ever the tour was thoroughly researched and extremely well organised, we well appreciate that these things don’t just happen, a great deal of hard work is involved.

P&T, Jaguar XK8

Just a note from Margaret and myself to thank you for organising such an ambitious tour of Sicily for us all.

You seem to have produced a most comprehensive trip from race track to ancient temples with everything else in between!

As I find it difficult to arrange an annual lunch for 3 old friends, I am amazed that you managed such a huge event apparently effortlessly.

Jeremy & Margaret, 1939 Bentley Derby

Thanks for an amazing tour – so many great memories. Looking forward to 2017 and Monte Carlo and also Scottish Highlands and Islands.

Peter & Ann, 1972 Triumph Stag

Thank you for a fabulous holiday – your best yet! Needless to say we had the best time and loved Sicily.

David & Jane, 1961 Jensen 541S

Just wanted to thank you for organising a sensational tour of Sicily. We went to all the best places, met some wonderful new friends and, the icing on the cake, the Targa Florio celebration.

You did a magnificent job and look forward to meeting on a future tour.

Neil & Olivia, 1957 Jaguar XK140

Well done for managing to organise such a wonderful trip with some excellent hotel choices. Attention to detail variety of attractions was excellent……..even gaining approval from partners less interested in motor vehicles!

John & Susan, Morgan Plus 8

Thank you for the huge amount of work you put into organising Targa Sicilia. It was an amazing tour and we have come home with some good memories.

Charles & Deirdre, Jaguar XJS

Just a note to say thanks very much for an excellent holiday.

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves on the trip, which was very well organised and took in a lot of Sicily that we wouldn’t have found otherwise. You managed to cram a lot into a couple of weeks with many interesting events and spectacles tied in together.

Hard to pick particular high points, but obviously the wonderfully ‘Sicilian-style’ day at Floriopolis was never-to-be-repeated (very glad we didn’t try to drive to it), the days to Noto and Modica, Siracusa – the list goes on and on. A particular favourite for me was driving Enna Pergusa, a circuit I have often read about but never visited. What it must have been like driving an F1 car around there before they put in the chicanes beggars belief.

Roger & Morag, 1968 Ford Mustang GT

Ian, just a quick note to say thanks for a great trip.
The organisation super and the road book amazing!
We had a lovely time and met some interesting people.

B&J. BMW Z8

Good afternoon Herr Group Leader!
Just a quick note to say thank you very much for a great tour. We both thoroughly enjoyed it (apart from the odd “domestic”) and the attractions and areas visited were most enjoyable.

On the way home we stayed at Hotel Meurice, on your recommendation you will recall, and I must say that it was as good as anything we’d stayed in on tour – good recommendation.
Once again many thanks.

M&D. Triumph Vitesse Convertible

Truly Fabulous!

Just a line to say thanks for all you have done to make the tour so enjoyable. It was shortly after the first day that we realised just how much effort had gone into making the road book, an incredible task.

We enjoyed it so much , although we were somewhat apprehensive when we saw the huge numbers on your list. However you pulled it off and gave us a brilliant few days so many many thanks. How lovely it was meeting up with the usual suspects and how good it was meeting new ones.

It was all good motoring and good fun.

RM and MM (Porsche 356)

Just a short note to thank you both for yet another excellent Credit Crunch Tour, We thoroughly enjoyed the whole event with its informal and relaxed ambiance. We congratulate you on the slick organisation and are already looking forward to next year’s event.

FRIDAY / SATURDAY / SUNDAY

This weekend event was run for the first time last year at the request of people who had been on the Credit Crunch in April and it turned out to be a great success, with a party atmosphere prevailing throughout.

By popular demand the event is running again in the same format as previously but I’ve been informed the decorations at Abbey Cwm Hir will be different from last time. That said, it’s difficult to take everything in on just one visit!

So…! I’ve negotiated again with the four-star Metropole Hotel in Llandrindod Wells for a three-night dinner, bed & breakfast break, with traditional Christmas dinner on the Saturday evening, and to include use of the spa and heated swimming pool, at the incredibly low price of just £245 per person based on two people sharing. The guided tour of Abbey Cwm Hir Hall on the Saturday morning is also included in the package!

The offer is only available to people who are on the mailing list and priority is being given to those who have been on tours, but places are limited so if you wish to attend please act quickly as the closing date is November 15th.

Complete the form below to indicate your interest:

If you attended last year’s Credit Crunch or the Welsh Weekend this June you need no introduction to the eccentricity of the owners and the incredible displays in each of the fifty-two rooms. Each room will be decorated for the Christmas period so I guarantee even those who visited before will once more emerge with heads shaking in disbelief!

I’ve included some photographs of displays to give a flavour of what you will see, but in addition to a relaxing break, Llandrindod Wells and its surroundings have a great deal to offer, such as the picturesque reservoirs of the Elan Valley, the Red Kite Centre, and the National Cycle Museum.

The itinerary is as follows:

Friday, December 9th. Arrivals at the 4-star Metropole Hotel & Spa during the day, followed by dinner at 7.30pm.

Saturday, December 10th. After a leisurely breakfast we depart to arrive at Abbey Cwm Hir Hall for 10.30am. Nestling in a picturesque valley this amazing building, built in 1834, was purchased in 1997 in a semi-derelict state by Paul & Victoria Humpherston and restored over a nine year period. Virtually every room has a different theme and you will emerge from the guided tour shaking your head – you definitely will not have seen anything like it before!

A short walk away is the tiny hamlet of Abbey Cwm Hir itself, along with the ruins of the 12th century abbey, once the biggest in Wales and dwarfing that at St. Davids in Pembrokeshire. If the weather is fine it’s worth investigating.

The afternoon is free to explore the region and perhaps view the Red Kite feeding at Rhyader.

Traditional Christmas dinner will be at 7.30pm.

Sunday, December 11th. A day to chill out but if you feel like a little run out then perhaps the Elan Valley, even for those who did it in April 2015 or June this year, might be a possibility.

Dinner will be again at 7.30pm.

Monday, December 12th. Departure for home, but if you wish to stay an extra night a special rate of just £45 per person, dinner, bed, and breakfast applies.

WINTER SPECIAL. To reiterate, the cost for the event, after serious bartering, is just £245 per person, based on two people sharing. Single supplement £21 per night.

Included in the price are the following:

  • Three nights’ accommodation on a dinner, bed & breakfast basis at the 4-star Metropole Hotel, Llandrindod Wells with traditional Christmas dinner on the Saturday evening.
Use of hotel swimming pool & facilities
  • Entrance and guided tour of Abbey Cwm Hir HallDetailed route instructions for Abbey Cwm Hir, Elan Valley and Red Kite Centre
  • Information pack on arrival with leaflets on local attraction

If you have any queries please don’t hesitate to call me on 01824 790280, or email countrylanetours@aol.com.

Of course, being December, it’s not compulsory to turn up in a vintage or classic car!

Targa Sicilia May 5th – 18th 2016https://www.countrylanetours.co.uk/1072/targa-sicilia-tour/ Sat, 06 Jun 2015 18:20:58 +0000 http://www.countrylanetours.co.uk/?p=1072 targa sicilia 2016

Country Lane Tours is arranging Targa Sicilia, a fabulous tour of this breathtakingly beautiful island and, in conjunction with Automobile Club Palermo, participating in the celebrations of the 110th anniversary of the first Targa Florio.

Starting with the overnight ferry from Genoa, the tour begins with four nights in Villa Igiea, a stunning hotel overlooking the bay of Palermo and originally owned by the Florio family. This allows plenty of time to relax as well as taking in the sights of the ancient city, joining the activities arranged by Automobile Club Palermo, and, of course, driving the famous forty-seven mile Targa Florio route circuit, last used for the event in 1973.

Agrigento, Ragusa (Montalbano country!), Siracusa and Taomina before skirting Mount Etna and calling in at Autodromo di Pegusa on the way back to Palermo and the ferry.

Ragusa & Siracusa are two night halts and daily mileage is low, allowing for plenty of time to sightsee, view the local ceramics, and take in the fabulous Greek temples along with other amazing attractions on the way.

Sadly both German and Dutch motorail have now ceased so the 750 miles from Calais to Genoa has to be driven. However, optional overnight halts at roughly 250 mile intervals will allow leisurely progress across Europe and enable the faster cars to skip and join the group at will.

On May 15th the standard 1975 Rover P6, pictured at the old pits at Cerda, was driven the  738  miles from Genoa to Calais in ten and a half hours so it’s quite feasible to drive the whole distance in a day with a fast car. The continental motorways aren’t afflicted with millions of cones and average speed cameras!

The old pits at Cerda

The old pits at Cerda

Country Lane Tours clients need no introduction to the meticulous planning that precedes each event, with every inch of the route reconnoitred and each hotel carefully vetted and personally checked.

On Targa Sicila there will be facilities for secure trailer storage in Genoa for those who wish to bring machines not suited to the hike across Europe, the mileage in Sicily being approximately seven hundred and fifty in the two weeks. In addition a baggage service will be operating to deliver between hotels to aid participants whose cars have limited storage and it may be possible for that service to carry from the UK.

The itinerary is as follows:

Tuesday, May 3rd 2016

Calais – Vitry-le-Francois. This is the first of the optional stop overs. The medieval town is situated on the River Marne and an easy run from Calais through pleasant countryside. The support vehicle and mechanic will follow cars from here. Mileage for day – 217.

Wednesday, May 4th 2016

Vitry-le-Francois – Annemasse. Annemasse is on the outskirts of Geneva and 475 miles from Calais so some may wish to join here. Mileage for day – 252.

Thursday May 5th 2016

Genoa and ferry (Annemasse – Genoa). The tour now starts properly, with everyone due at the ferry terminal by 9pm. This gives plenty of time for a scenic run from Annemasse via the mountains, Mont Blanc Tunnel, Valle D’Aosta and the rice fields north of Alessandria to Genoa. Mileage for day – 231.

All cabins are ensuite with sea view and the ship has two restaurants, one being cafeteria-style.

Friday, May 6th 2016

Palermo. The ship docks at 8pm and it’s a short drive once disembarked to Villa Igiea, our hotel for the next four nights. Mileage for day – 3.

Saturday, May 7th 2016

Targa Florio celebrations. The Automobile Club Palermo is still sorting the exact schedule, but it will certainly include the museum at the pits in Cerda plus various special demonstrations. Updates will be sent out as they become available! Overnight Palermo. Mileage for day – TBA

Sunday, May 8th 2016

Targa Florio run. Today we will drive the route of the Circuito Delle  Madonie  Cerda.  You  will  be amazed at the way the road twists and turns through the mountains and villages before dropping down to the Fournello Straight. At 3.7 miles it’s longer than the Mulsanne at Le Mans!

Right: Ristoranti Baglio Himera Cars reached speeds of over 200mph on this section but half way along lies Ristoranti Baglio Himera which is our lunch halt.

The walls inside are adorned with historic photographs and we’ll be joined by Nino Vaccarella, three times winner of the Targa Florio and also victorious for Ferrari at Le Mans in 1964. Overnight Palermo. Mileage for day – 60.

Palermo. A coach will collect us from the hotel at 10am for a guided tour of this historic town. At the end of the tour you can either stop in the centre to explore or return to the hotel and perhaps chill out with a glass of wine by the pool. Overnight Palermo. Mileage for day – 0.

Tuesday, May 10th 2016

Palermo – Mazara Del Vallo. Setting off from Palermo our route hugs the coast for most of the route. The small hilltop town of Erice (2,460 feet above sea level) and the coastal town of Marsala are ideal stopping points. Garibaldi landed in Marsala in 1860 at the start of his quest to unite Italy.

Mazara del Vallo was founded by the Phoenicians in the 9th century BC. It was occupied by the Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals, Ostrogoths and Byzantines before taken under Arab control in 827AD! Arab influence is still evident today. Overnight Mazara. Mileage for day – 102.

Wednesday, May 11th 2016

Mazara del Vallo – Agrigento. Great driving roads again as we once more hug the coast and visit the five amazingly preserved Greek temples at Selinunte. To give you total temple sensory overload we then drive through the stunning Valle dei Templi! Overnight Agrigento. Mileage for day – 77.

Thursday, May 12th 2016

Agrigento – Caltagione – Ragusa. We now cut inland to

Caltagione, famous for its ceramics and incredible decorated staircases, before heading south to Ragusa. We’re now in Inspector Montalbano territory, for  those devotees of the TV detective series, and, of course, we’ll be visiting some of the places used for filming during our two-night stop. Overnight Ragusa. Mileage for day – 112.

Left: Ceramic decorated staircase, Caltagione

Friday, May 13th 2016

Ragusa.  A  day  to  relax  and wander around this historic town used for a great deal of the filming for the fictional Vigata. Perhaps lunch at La Rusticana? It doubled as Montalbano’s favourite restaurant Trattoria San Calogero in the series and its interior walls are adorned with photographs of the stars. However there will be an optional scenic run in the morning to Punta Secca to visit the house used as the setting for Montalbano’s home and there may even be an opportunity to stand on the famous balcony. Overnight Ragusa. Mileage for day – 0 (40)

Saturday, May 14th 2016

Ragusa – Noto – Siracusa. Noto is famous for its baroque buildings and in 2002 received Unesco World Heritage status.

From Noto we travel to Syracuse, once again a Unesco World Heritage site, this time since 2005. Overnight Siracusa.. Mileage for day – 55

Above: Pantalica Necropolis

Sunday, May 15th 2016

Siracusa. Another day to relax and explore this fascinating city with its incredible antiquities.

Monday, May 16th 2016

Siracusa – Taomina. Today we once more hug the coast as we head north. Approaching Taomina there are splendid views of snow covered Mount Etna. Overnight Taomina. Mileage for day – 75.

Tuesday May 17th 2016

Taomina – Enna – Palermo. A slightly longer day, but we don’t board the ferry until 9pm so there’s plenty of time to take in the sights and we’re also hoping to arrange a visit to the Autodromo di Pergusa, a little known racing circuit based around a volcanic lake. Overnight ferry. Mileage for day 175

Wednesday, May 18th 2016

Genoa. The ferry docks at 9pm so I’m arranging a hotel within easy driving distance. Overnight Genoa. Mileage for day – 5 (approx!)

The 2nd Swiss Swirl: September 2015https://www.countrylanetours.co.uk/798/the-2nd-swiss-swirl-september-2015/ Sun, 11 Jan 2015 22:00:12 +0000 http://www.countrylanetours.co.uk/?page_id=798 September 15th – 26th, 2015

swiss tour

The first Swiss Swirl in September 2013 was voted a great success by participants so the 2015 event follows the same pattern with very minor modifications, the most major of which is we are staying four nights instead of three in Interlaken as the feedback was that more time was needed in the town.

swiss2

In keeping with the tradition of all Country Lane Tours it’s designed to be a sightseeing holiday with your car and as usual a service vehicle and mechanic will be in attendance throughout to ensure peace of mind and deal with any mechanical problems that may occur, and an experienced tour director will be present from start to finish.
The itinerary is as follows:

Tuesday, September 15th 2015

The group collects for a first night dinner and overnight halt at a hotel near Bethune. The hotel is in a converted brewery! Dinner will be 8pm which will enable people to arrive from the various channel ports without stress. Mileage from Calais 52.

Wednesday, September 16th 2015

Bethune – Provins. Today’s route takes us through scenic countryside via the war memorial at Vimy Ridge to Provins. Our hotel is on the edge of the main square right in the centre of the walled historic centre of this medieval town.
Mileage for day 175.

Thursday, September 17th 2015

Provins – Beaune. Another leisurely run through the French countryside to the picturesque town of Beaune, in the heart of the Burgandy wine-making area, on route visiting the incredible Vaux-le-Vicomte, reputedly the inspiration for Versailles.

swiss3

Our hotel is just a few minutes walk from the centre and a visit to the 15th century hospice is an absolute must (above). Mileage for day, 165.

Friday, September 18th 2015

Beaune. A relaxing day to enjoy the town but also perhaps take a trip out to the amazing Chateau de Savigny, a short distance from Beaune.

swiss4

This fairytale building houses a collection of motorcycles and Abarth cars, whilst a paddock next to it is host to an array of airplanes as well as sheds containing ancient tractors and fire engines!

On your way out you can visit the shop and buy some of their wines! Mileage for day, 0 (10).

Saturday, September 19th 2015

Beaune to Interlaken. The route today takes us through more scenic countryside before crossing the border into Switzerland.

Our main hotel, with its Michelin recommended restaurant, is in the centre of the town with an overspill just around the corner. All evening meals, bar one, will be in the main hotel.

Interlaken is a very pleasant town situated, as the name implies, between two lakes, and you might like to sit and watch the paragliders descend onto the town green. It’s interesting, as you walk around the town, to see a succession of them, like giant butterflies, descend form the cliffs. If you feel adventurous you could take part in a tandem jump as five of our group did last time! Mileage for day, 190.

Sunday, September 20th 2015

Interlaken. If the weather is clear a trip by train up the Jungfrau to the highest station in Europe (11,332 feet) is definitely worthwhile as the views are spectacular. For the less intrepid the mountain can be seen from the hotel!

In the afternoon a trip on the lake by paddle steamer has been arranged.

Monday, September 21st 2015

Interlaken. The run today takes in the four main mountain passes around Interlaken, the Grimsel, Furka, St Gothard and Susten.

Once again the views are stunning and in Airolo, where we start the ascent of the old St. Gothard Pass (still cobbled – see left), we’re only 70 miles from the Italian border. Mileage for day, 175.

Tuesday, September 22nd 2015

A day to chill out in the town, or maybe by the hotel’s indoor pool!

Wednesday,September 23rd 2015

Interlaken – Mulhouse – Epinal. The route today takes us on main roads as far as the French National Motor Museum (previously the Schlumpf brothers Bugatti collection) in Mulhouse before heading off the motorway to our overnight halt in Epinal, a delightful small town on the banks of the Moselle. Our hotel is just a short walk from the main square. Mileage for day, 185.

Thursday, September 24th 2015

Epinal – Reims. Once more we run through the rural French countryside, taking a slight detour to the old Reims Racing Circuit, a motoring version of the Marie Celeste, before arriving at our hotel.

automobile

Reims is a fascinating city and the cathedral is well worth a visit, especially if the Son et Lumiere is taking place. Mileage for day, 165.

Friday, September 25th 2015

Reims. In the morning a visit has been arranged to G.H. Mumm Champagne, followed by an optional visit to the Reims Motor Museum which houses an eclectic assortment of cars, motorcycles and toys.

The afternoon is free to further explore the city.

In the evening there will be a farewell dinner.

Saturday, September 26th 2015

Departure for home. Reims is only 170 miles from Calais on an excellent motorway but you may decide to meander through the bac kroads and spend an extra night in France.

If so the Meurice in Calais is owned by a classic car enthusiast (he keeps an E-Type and a Rolls Royce Cloud 3 in the basement) and the restaurant is excellent value. In addition, you can pay in sterling for the room!

Included in the price are the following:

  • Ten nights hotel accommodation on a B&B basis
  • First night’s dinner in Bethune
  • Entry to Chateau Vaux le Vicomte
  • Three nights’ dinner in Michelin recommended restaurant Interlaken
  • Paddle steamer lake trip (first class)
  • Return rail journey from Thun
  • Entry to French National Motor Museum, Mulhouse
  • Guided tour of G.H. Mumm Champagne
  • Entry to Reims Motor Museum
  • Service vehicle and mechanic
  • View of Jungfrau from our hotel
  • Experienced tour director
  • Detailed road book and map
  • Rally plates
  • Windscreen sticker
  • Farewell dinner in Reims.
  • Sundry extras

Space precludes a detailed description of everything you will see, so the details here are necessarily a synopsis. However, the leisurely daily mileage allows plenty of time to relax and enjoy the scenery and quiet roads as well as the hotel facilities. If you have any queries please don’t hesitate to call me on 01824 790280, or email countrylanetours@aol.com.

The entry is restricted to just thirty cars and allocation of the twenty-three rooms at the main hotel in Interlaken will be strictly on a first-come-first served basis. Early booking is therefore advisable to avoid disappointment. The approximate route for the 2nd Swiss Swirl is marked in blue

The 4th Dragon Trail: August 2015https://www.countrylanetours.co.uk/794/the-4th-dragon-trail-august-2015/ Sun, 11 Jan 2015 12:09:39 +0000 http://www.countrylanetours.co.uk/?p=794 16th August 2015 until 22nd August 2015

The 4th Dragon Trail follows an entirely different route to the previous three but as usual features mostly quiet rural roads and, of course, stunning scenery. This time we start with three nights in North Wales at the fabulous Deganwy Quay Hotel, right on the Conwy Estuary, before following the coast east and then heading south along the border with England, stopping in Oswestry and Brecon and finishing with two nights in the Roman town of Caerleon.

wales

Once again we visit numerous attractions on route and the leisurely timetable enables you to travel at your own pace, enjoy the great driving roads, and have a relaxing holiday with your vintage or classic car.

All hotels are superior quality and as with all Country Lane Tours I will be on hand throughout to deal with any problems that might occur.

Traffic calming – Welsh Borders!

Access is easy from the main A55 Chester – Holyhead dual carriageway.

Monday, August 17th 2015

Conwy and Llandudno. This is a relaxing day designed to give you a feeling for the local area. We start the day by crossing the river into Conwy before taking the Sychnant Pass to Penmaenmawr. From the summit there are stunning views across the bay to Puffin Island and Anglesey.

Returning along the A55 we drop into the Victorian seaside town of Llandudno (retail therapy opportunity!) and then climb to the summit of the Great Orme before descending to the spectacular Marine Drive (used regularly in the past as a stage on the RAC Rally) and returning to the hotel. The relaxed schedule allows you plenty of time to explore historic Conwy and Victorian Llandudno.

Mileage for day – 30

Tuesday, August 18th 2015

Deganwy to Blaenau Ffestiniog. Leaving our hotel we meander along the east side of the Conwy valley, negotiate the Crimea Pass to arrive at Llechwedd Slate Caverns where a small train takes us right into the heart of the mountain to experience how slate was mined all those years ago.

Wales

Leaving Blaenau the route takes in the Aberglaslyn Pass, Beddgelert, and the Nant Gwynant Pass (great views of Snowdon) before descending to the picturesque village of Betws-y-Coed, renowned in Victorian times for its artists’ colony. A visit to Swallow Falls is a must!

Leaving Betws-y-Coed we travel down the west side of the Conwy valley, taking in Trefriw Woollen Mills and the world famous Bodnant Gardens before arriving back at our hotel.

Mileage for day – 75

Wednesday, August 19th 2015

Deganwy to Oswestry. Leaving Deganwy we meander along the North Wales Coast before starting to head south, following the border with England.

For a few miles you get the opportunity to view some of the remains of North Wales industrial heritage as well as passing the wreck of the car ferry Duke of Lancaster, beached at Mostyn since 1979.

We visit the ancient market town of Oswestry, along with the train museum, before arriving at the overnight halt, the Lion Quays Hotel, on the edge of the Shropshire Union Canal.

Mileage for day – 75

Thursday, August 20st  2015

Oswestry to Brecon. The longest mileage of the tour today but once more interesting rural roads and villages with some stunning scenery. Along the way we pass through Montgomery (a town the world has passed by), stop for a wine tasting and buffet lunch at Kerry Vale Vineyard and visit the Judge’s Lodging Museum in Presteigne.

Mileage for day – 93

Friday, August 21st 2015

Brecon to Caerleon. To make up for yesterday we have a much shorter distance to cover today! This gives you an opportunity to explore this historic military town and visit the Regimental Museum before once more heading into the hills.

Caerleon is a charming small town with strong Roman connections going back to 75AD. Our hotel for the next two nights is the Priory, dating back to 1180 when it was a Cistercian monastery. It’s right on the edge of the walled town, opposite the Roman baths, and just five minutes walk from the amphitheatre.

I suspect you’ll arrive by lunchtime which will give you time to settle in and explore during the afternoon. Lunch at the priory is highly recommended as you select food to be freshly cooked from an array set up like the counter of an old style shop.

Mileage for day – 43

Saturday, August 22nd 2015

Caerleon and Newport. A run around local attractions today, taking in Tredegar House, the Fourteen Locks visitor centre on the canal and the incredible Transporter Bridge across the River Usk at Newport, one of only eight such bridges still operational worldwide.
Mileage for day – 30

The 6th Viking Tour: May 2014https://www.countrylanetours.co.uk/12/6th-viking-tour/ https://www.countrylanetours.co.uk/12/6th-viking-tour/#respond Mon, 21 Jul 2014 22:26:31 +0000 http://www.countrylanetours.co.uk/?p=12 The ever popular Viking Tour ties in once again with British Car Week in Gothenburg and the amazing Tjoloholm Castle Rally where one thousand classic and vintage cars from all over Scandinavia gather each year in the grounds of this 18th century mansion built by a Scottish brewing magnate.

The route takes in spectacular scenery in Denmark, Sweden and Norway. For the second time we will be visiting Oslo, with a two night stop on our way north to the fjords and mountains.

scandinavia

Sogndal Pass, Norway

I have received feedback from a few people on my mailing list that they would love to come on a tour but can’t spend the full two weeks away most entail. For Italy and Croatia there is no solution, other than foregoing the vintage / classic car, and flying out to join part of a tour in a hire car.

However, this time there is a solution! You can do part of the tour! Sadly this does mean missing out on the scenery and deserted roads of Norway, but you are still able to enjoy the delights of Gothenburg and Tjoloholm as well as Denmark.

A free DVD of the Tjoloholm Castle Rally plus a stills CD of the last tour are available on request.

The tour schedule is as follows:

[nwm_map id=”2″]

 About the trip

Daily mileages are mostly low, and my allowed times for travel are normally totally beaten by even the slowest cars. In 2008 the 1925 1100cc Amilcar easily completed the entire route. The TOTAL mileage in Scandinavia is less than 1,200 in two weeks!

The trip is suitable for any car with a cruising speed of 45 – 50 mph and above, the only proviso being your cooling system needs to be tip top, for it is likely to be warm and there are plenty of hills!

This event, like all is designed to be a relaxing holiday with your car, not just an old car rally. There is no night driving, and absolutely no competition, other than getting to the bar first! The detailed road book enables you to travel at your own pace with little chance of getting lost. Please note: This itinerary may be subject to variation in the event of circumstances beyond our control.

What’s included in the price? *

  • The ferry in both directions Harwich – Esbjerg for car and crew
  • An outer (porthole) cabin on the ferry in both directions with private toilet & shower
  • Dinner on the ferry in both directions
  • Breakfast on the ferry in both directions
  • Hotels on a bed & breakfast basis
  • First night’s dinner in Gothenburg at Gothia Towers with coach pick up / return
  • Guided tour of Gothenburg by vintage tram
  • Guided tour of Volvo factory

*Note: Items in bold relate to the short tour (six nights)

You can request full details of the tour and a free DVD of the Tjoloholm Castle Event  via our contact form (please complete the address fields). Or give Ian a call on 01824 790280.

Entry restricted to just thirty cars.

Please note! Dates are provisional and may vary slightly. Why not get the full information pack and price? It’s a lot less than you think!
