The 2016 Country Lane Tours Welsh Weekend is based at the four-star Metropole Hotel in the Victorian spa town of Llandrindod Wells. It takes place on June 17th – 19th (20th) Friday / Saturday / Sunday / (Monday)
The quest to keep the three days at just £345 per person is becoming much more difficult as years progress but, after some serious negotiation, I’ve managed to get a deal with the hotel as luckily the current owner, the fifth generation of the family to run the business, is a car enthusiast. So, for the 5th time it’s still £345 per person, based on two people sharing!
The Metropole has recently been refurbished and upgraded and use of the swimming pool and spa is included in the package.
Llandrindod Wells itself is an interesting little town and its slightly faded Victorian grandeur has luckily not been blighted by modern development.
The itinerary is as follows:
Friday, June 17th. Arrivals at the 4-star Metropole Hotel & Spa during the day followed by dinner at 7.30pm.
Saturday, June 18th. After a leisurely breakfast we depart for a run through the lanes to Abbey Cwm Hir Hall.
Nestling in a picturesque valley this amazing building, built in 1834, was purchased in 1997 in a semi-derelict state by Paul & Victoria Humpherston and restored over a nine year period. Virtually every room has a different theme and you will emerge from the guided tour shaking your head at the sheer eccentricity – you definitely will not have seen anything like it before!
The twelve acre garden is now returned to pristine condition and a buffet lunch will be served in a marquee in the grounds.
A short walk away is the tiny hamlet of Abbey Cwm Hir, along with the ruins of the 12th century abbey.
After lunch we take to the lanes again and make our way via Welsh Royal Crystal in Rhayader to a loop around the lakes that contribute to the stunning beauty of the Elan Valley (below).
The display at the Elan Valley Visitor Centre gives an insight into the construction of the series of dams that were built to supply water to Birmingham.
Once back in Llandrindod Wells you’ll have time to relax, visit the National Cycle Museum a short distance from the hotel, and perhaps explore the town a little before dinner.
Dinner will be at 7.30pm.
Sunday, June 19th. After breakfast we depart via yet another scenic route to Hay-on-Wye, world famous for its myriad of second-hand bookshops and, of course, it’s the location for the annual literary festival.
The buffet lunch is at the award-winning Swan Inn.
The return route to the Metropole takes in more scenic roads.

Dinner will be again at 7.30pm.
Monday, June 20th. Departure for home, but if you wish to stay an extra night a special rate of just £65 per person, dinner, bed, and breakfast applies.
You might like to visit the Red Kite Feeding Centre at Rhayader, or just chill out in the hotel pool.
The cost for the event, after serious bartering, is once again just £345 per person, based on two people sharing. Single supplement £21 per night.
