December 9th / 10th / 11th 2016
FRIDAY / SATURDAY / SUNDAY
This weekend event was run for the first time last year at the request of people who had been on the Credit Crunch in April and it turned out to be a great success, with a party atmosphere prevailing throughout.
By popular demand the event is running again in the same format as previously but I’ve been informed the decorations at Abbey Cwm Hir will be different from last time. That said, it’s difficult to take everything in on just one visit!
So…! I’ve negotiated again with the four-star Metropole Hotel in Llandrindod Wells for a three-night dinner, bed & breakfast break, with traditional Christmas dinner on the Saturday evening, and to include use of the spa and heated swimming pool, at the incredibly low price of just £245 per person based on two people sharing. The guided tour of Abbey Cwm Hir Hall on the Saturday morning is also included in the package!
The offer is only available to people who are on the mailing list and priority is being given to those who have been on tours, but places are limited so if you wish to attend please act quickly as the closing date is November 15th.

If you attended last year’s Credit Crunch or the Welsh Weekend this June you need no introduction to the eccentricity of the owners and the incredible displays in each of the fifty-two rooms. Each room will be decorated for the Christmas period so I guarantee even those who visited before will once more emerge with heads shaking in disbelief!
I’ve included some photographs of displays to give a flavour of what you will see, but in addition to a relaxing break, Llandrindod Wells and its surroundings have a great deal to offer, such as the picturesque reservoirs of the Elan Valley, the Red Kite Centre, and the National Cycle Museum.
The itinerary is as follows:
Friday, December 9th. Arrivals at the 4-star Metropole Hotel & Spa during the day, followed by dinner at 7.30pm.
Saturday, December 10th. After a leisurely breakfast we depart to arrive at Abbey Cwm Hir Hall for 10.30am. Nestling in a picturesque valley this amazing building, built in 1834, was purchased in 1997 in a semi-derelict state by Paul & Victoria Humpherston and restored over a nine year period. Virtually every room has a different theme and you will emerge from the guided tour shaking your head – you definitely will not have seen anything like it before!
A short walk away is the tiny hamlet of Abbey Cwm Hir itself, along with the ruins of the 12th century abbey, once the biggest in Wales and dwarfing that at St. Davids in Pembrokeshire. If the weather is fine it’s worth investigating.
The afternoon is free to explore the region and perhaps view the Red Kite feeding at Rhyader.
Traditional Christmas dinner will be at 7.30pm.
Sunday, December 11th. A day to chill out but if you feel like a little run out then perhaps the Elan Valley, even for those who did it in April 2015 or June this year, might be a possibility.
Dinner will be again at 7.30pm.
Monday, December 12th. Departure for home, but if you wish to stay an extra night a special rate of just £45 per person, dinner, bed, and breakfast applies.
WINTER SPECIAL. To reiterate, the cost for the event, after serious bartering, is just £245 per person, based on two people sharing. Single supplement £21 per night.
Included in the price are the following:
- Three nights’ accommodation on a dinner, bed & breakfast basis at the 4-star Metropole Hotel, Llandrindod Wells with traditional Christmas dinner on the Saturday evening.
Use of hotel swimming pool & facilities
- Entrance and guided tour of Abbey Cwm Hir HallDetailed route instructions for Abbey Cwm Hir, Elan Valley and Red Kite Centre
- Information pack on arrival with leaflets on local attraction
