The two Unknown Italy tours have been a great success and there is already interest in the 2014 event, with a priority list now open. The concept, like all tours run by Country Lane, is for a sightseeing holiday with a vintage or classic car (but you are still welcome in a modern!).
About the tour
In order to save driving a sixteen hundred mile round trip across Europe cars and crews are motorailed from Dusseldorf to Alessandria during the night, with a private cabin on the train. You get a chance to look at the scenery and on the outward journey when you wake up you’re in Italy. Alternatively a reduced price is available if you wish to drive one or both ways.
On the four Grand Tours (free DVD available on request) we have concentrated on some of the main attractions in Italy (Florence, Rome, Pisa, Sorrento Verona, Venice, etc.) and whilst there are some tremendous sights along the way such as Monte Casino and the Amalfi Coast, we hardly touch ‘True Italy’, something this tour aims to rectify.
We will be travelling roads and passing through villages that hardly ever see a tourist, never mind a vintage or classic car. You travel at your own pace, and the detailed road book gives you precise instructions on where to turn left or right.
However, you can, of course, plot your own route using the supplied Michelin map book and, as one participant on the last Unknown Italy tour did in his vintage car, spend the entire time looking for difficult roads as my route, despite being mostly on back roads, was still too tame!
All Country Lane Tours are accompanied by a service vehicle crewed by an experienced mechanic, ensuring peace of mind should problems occur.
However, in all the tours I’ve organised problems have normally been minor, and also few and far between. Old cars are very reliable!
Daily mileages are mostly low, especially in Molise (see below), and my allowed times for travel are normally totally beaten by even the slowest cars. The TOTAL mileage in Italy is less than 1,600!
The trip is suitable for any car with a cruising speed of 45 – 50 mph and above, the only proviso being your cooling system needs to be tip top, for it’s likely to be warm!
The mileages to Dusseldorf from the ferry ports are as follows:
- Amsterdam – (ex Newcastle) 143 miles,
- Rotterdam – (ex Hull) 143 miles,
- Calais – (ex Dover) 250 miles, and
- Hook of Holland – (ex Harwich) 162 miles.
*NOTE THAT DUE TO UNAVAILABLE CIRCUMSTANCES THIS TOUR WILL NOW START TWO DAYS EARLIER – WE’LL UPDATE THE ITINERARY BELOW AS SOON AS WE CAN!*
The places we’ll visit

There’s no night driving, and absolutely no competition, other than getting to the bar first!
